Events

The Department of History and Politics hosts a wide range of events throughout the academic year, including public lectures, workshops, film screenings, and social gatherings. These events bring together students, faculty, and members of the wider community to engage with historical questions, current research, and public debate. All are welcome to attend.

 

Spring 2026 Lectures and Public Appearances

Sunday, February 22, 230 PM: Professor Amy Kittelstrom will be giving a lecture, "The History of Slavery in Sonoma County from 1850," at the Petaluma Historical Library and Museum. Sponsored by the Petaluma Blacks for Community Development, this lecture is part of their programming for the Centennial of Black History Month and is based on the groundbreaking research Prof. Kittelstrom has directed since 2023 in community partnership with the Santa Rosa-Sonoma County NAACP. This research received a 2025 Sonoma County Historical Records Commission Collections and Archives Recognition Award. For more information, click here.

 

Wednesday, Feb 25, 4PM in Stevenson 1102: Dr. Randall Balmer, Professor of Religion at Dartmouth College and New York Times bestselling author, will discuss his 2025 book America's Best Idea: The Separation of Church and State. Doors open at 4 p.m. for coffee, tea, & connection Program begins at 4:30 p.m., concluding by 6 p.m.

 

March 16, 12-1PM: Steve Estes, Behind the Beats: San Francisco and the Birth of an American Counterculture (HSSA Brown Bag lecture, STEV 3900).
